Summary
On the occasion of the Commemoration of the Centenary of Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL) and on the advent of several major modifications in energy utilization and recovery, the Center for Molecular Sciences and Materials of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of FCUL in collaboration with the CREVER, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Universitat Rovira I Virgili, Tarragona, Spain, decided to jointly promote a workshop on the potential applications of Ionic Liquids (ILs) and their mixtures with other solvents and nanomaterials in two very important areas:\\\\n• Absorption refrigeration and heat pumps\\\\n• New heat transfer fluids\\\\nThis workshop is part of the European Marie Curie Action NARILAR - New Working Fluids based on Natural Refrigerants and Ionic Liquids for Absorption Refrigeration and was recognized as Eurotherm Seminar 97. The aim of EUROTHERM is to promote and foster European cooperation in Thermal Sciences and Heat Transfer by gathering together scientists and engineers working in specialized areas.\\\\nIt is the aim of this workshop to bring together researchers working on ILs, heat transfer fluids, and nanomaterials as well as company people producing and supplying ILs and to discuss on possible working fluids particularly ILs for heat transfer applications, their economic viability and technical challenges. Related industries were invited to participate in the workshop for potential discussions and collaborations, and BASF, EVONIK, IOLITEC and SOLCHEMAR decided to give their contribution. The workshop was organized with academic and industrial keynote addresses, from internationally recognized academic and industrial experts in the field followed by presentations of contributed papers and posters. \\\\nNaturally, to discuss such important main topics, opens the field for many contributions on the areas of synthesis, characterization and several engineering applications of ionic liquids. The papers submitted were classified in there different topics, namely Ionic Liquids-Synthesis and Characterization; Ionic Liquids and Absorption Refrigeration; and Ionic Liquid-Processes and Heat Transfer, which make the basis of the oral contributions and nearly forty posters.\\\\nIn order to discuss the actual and future opportunities of using ionic liquids in these important areas among scientists and industrial experts, two panel discussions, on absorption refrigeration and heat pumps and new heat transfer fluids, followed by plenary discussion of the main conclusions will focus the results of Wils2012 also on the future, helping to contribute to economic growth and society welfare. \\\\nThe organizing committee is very pleased with the results so far achieved, and hopes to publish a series of selected papers in a special issue of the Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data, during the current year.\\\\nIn a time of economic restrictions, some sponsors could be found, namely FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e para a Tecnologia, Portugal, o Departament d’Economia e Coneixement, Generalitat de Catalunya, Evonik Industries, BASF and Sociedade Portuguesa de Química. To all a warm thank is left.
