Summary
The Almansor River surrounding the Montemor-o-Novo city (Alentejo region, SW Iberia) displays outstanding outcrops of heterogeneously deformed foliated diatexite with enclaves cut by granitic rocks that must be preserved. Studies of these outstanding exposures of metamorphic and plutonic rocks provide a unique window into the interior of an ancient mountain range. The study of the Rio Almansor migmatites and associated plutonic rocks, representing the core of the Évora Gneiss Dome, allowed the publication of several articles of international high scientific value. In 2024, it was submitted to the Geosites database of Portugal, but it is still little known at the national and international levels. This Portuguese geosite is visited annually by national and foreigner researchers, schools, University students, and the public, and this demand has increased after the Covid-19 pandemic. A collaborative project for enhancing, disseminating, and preserving the Rio Almansor Migmatites Geosite started officially in 2024. In this project, "Geological Heritage of the Municipality of Montemor-o-Novo," scientific coordinators, municipal staff, university students, and schoolteachers collaborate on planning and implementing outreach activities for promoting Earth Sciences research and education, Geoheritage preservation, and geotourism.
