Resumo
Ionic liquids (IL) are one of the most promising fluids in chemistry and in various applications. Composed of at least one cation and one anion, ILs have some relevant properties, namely their high thermal stability, non-flammability, high electrical conductivity and their low vapor pressure over a wide range of temperatures. The number of combinations of anions and cations in ILs is immense. As such, the IL can be design for a specific purpose. These compounds can\nbe used as electrolytes in batteries and as solvents in organic synthesis, and they can have medicinal and industrial applications [1–3]. Many authors claimed that ILs are environment-friendly solvents. However, in the last decade more studies have been published on the toxicity of these compounds (in animals, plants, microorganisms, soil, marine environment, etc.) and their safety has been contested, being a characteristic that depends on the IL and on the target of study [4].\nDespite the ILs’ promising qualities already mentioned, there have been few experimental measurements of their most important thermal properties, namely density, electrical and thermal conductivity, and viscosity, as well as other properties like speed of sound and refractive index. In this way, the work made in our lab provides accurate data regarding the thermophysical properties of ILs, necessary for a deeper understanding of these fluids and making them a\nmore viable option for several applications. Furthermore, our group has the capacity to verify the ILs performance in certain applications, having built prototypes of heat exchangers and solar collectors, for example.\nThe study of the cytotoxicity of ILs is significant for their application. Therefore, our group also performs MTT assays to measure cytotoxicity in certain cell types, to ensure greater knowledge of this class of compounds.
