Summary
The possible use of nanomaterials and nanosystems as alternative heat transfer fluids require the development of a strategy for their production, use and disposal, involving environmental and safety requirements, which can restrict the a priori selected systems. Therefore, the implementation of a regulatory framework, a driving force for nanotechnologies development, is essential for the acceptance by society. A strategy to select a given nanofluid or IoNanofluid for a given application, bound by the environmental and safety regulatory frameworks, was recently proposed [1]. \nAlthough nanofluids (an IoNanofluids) have been proposed to be used in several heat transfer applications, the discussions are mostly based in thermal conductivity enhancements, without paying attention to the type of nanomaterial propose, or the stability at long-term of the nanofluid (stable dispersions of nanomaterials in molecular fluids or ionic melts). The behaviour of the complex nanosystems, sols in colloid language, need to be studied completely, in order that these systems became a real, safe and economic alternative to heat transfer fluids.\nIt is the purpose of this paper to analyse the necessary strategy of their application in industry, exemplifying technically with the determination of heat transfer coefficients in a selected heat exchanger (concentric tube), using a promising new ionic liquid and their mixtures with water as the base fluid, [C2mim][CH3SO3] (ST35™, BASF), for which their thermophysical properties were recently determined [2,3]. The nanomaterial used was a natural melanin, obtained from cuttlefish, and previously demonstrated to increase significantly the efficiency of thermal storage in a pilot solar collector [1,4]. A discussion will also be made in general, to the real added value of using nanofluids based in water as heat transfer fluids. \n[1] Maria José Lourenço, João Alexandre, Charlotte Huisman, Xavier Paredes, Carlos Nieto de Castro. The balance between energy, environmental security, and technical performance: the regulatory challenge of nanofluids.
