Summary
Ionanofluids (INFs) – composed of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) dispersed in ionic liquids (ILs) – are hybrid systems covering improved thermal conductivity, non-flammability, high stability, which can lead to efficient and safe heat transfer media. We present structural and spectroscopic studies, and molecular dynamics simulations correlated with sky-high (40%) enhancement in thermal conductivity of 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([BMpyr][NTf2])-based INFs with C-sp2 rich, long,\ncrystalline MWCNTs. We found that nanolayer coalescence, supported by geometry-driven MWCNT assembling, leads to the nanotube bundles toward 3D-networks in INFs (Fig. 1). The energy of CNTs walls–IL interaction obtained from molecular dynamics simulations shows that the formation of CNT networks, separated by a layer of IL ions is, most likely, \na thermodynamically favorable process. In turn, the correlation between ID/IG and ID/I2D integrated intensity ratios suggests formation of the new covalent bonds between \nthe broken nanotube and, most probably, the IL cation. Such a capture would neutralize dangling bonds upon the MWCNTs ultrasonication-induced cutting. Thus, the molecular perfection of the MWCNT structure as the thermoactive component with its supramolecular arrangement and the MWCNT-IL interactions affect extraordinary thermal conductivity enhancement.
