Thermophysical Properties of Ionic Liquid + Water Mixtures. An Insight into their Structure

Resumo
Ionic liquid and water mixtures may show very interesting macroscopic behaviour, as reflected in the change of their thermophysical properties with composition and temperature.\\nProperties like density, speed of sound, viscosity, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, refractive index and diffusion coefficients (and derived excess properties) have been determined for several systems, and the results obtained in our laboratory will be compared [1-3]. The discussion on the structure of this mixtures at the molecular level will also be based in correlation spectroscopy and computer simulations for mixtures of hydrophilic ionic liquids with water obtained in the literature. The binary systems studied involve the following ionic liquids: [C2mim][OCOCH3], [C2mim][CH3SO3], [C2mim][C2H5SO4], [C2mim][CF3SO3], [C4mim][BF4], [C4mpyr][N(CN)2] and [(CH3)3NOH][OCOCH3]. \\nResults obtained seem to support the existence of different zones, with the predominance of specific interactions cation-anion-water molecules, as sketched in Figure 1.
