Summary
Alcohols when added to gasoline can increase the octane number, reduce exhaust gas\nemissions, and enhance combustion. Butanol is the most similar alcohol to gasoline being\ntherefore suitable to replace this fuel. On the other hand, butanol can be produced from\nfossil fuels it can also be obtained from a biomass process and thus generating a promising\nbiofuel (bio-butanol). The general interest to produce biofuels like bio-butanol has increased\ndue to the concerns about global warming, the restricted legislations that countries have\nimplemented in the amount of non-renewable energy sources and the increasing price of\ncrude oil [1]. The most used process to produce bio-butanol is by acetone-butanol-ethanol\n(ABE) fermentation [2]. For this process to be more efficient it is necessary a good recovery\nof n-butanol. To achieve this, vapor-liquid equilibrium data is the key to have a good design\nof a distillation column or for revamping the units that already exist [3].\nIn this work VLE data from several mixtures relevant to the ABE process, such as ethanol\n+butanol, methanol + water, and butanol + water will be compared and evaluated using the\nsoftware ASPEN PLUS V11 with the purpose of retrieving new NRTL binary parameters.\nSeveral thermodynamic consistency tests will also be employed and compared, revealing its\nadvantages and weaknesses in data evaluation.
