Summary
The growing awareness on the effects of climate change, along with the increase in energy consumption worldwide, makes it urgent to find renewable energy alternatives and improve and develop more efficient equipment, since the majority of the energy produced is generated from burning fossil fuels [1,2]. A substantial portion of all that energy is used in temperature control devices (domestic and industrial). In the refrigeration field, more specifically in absorption refrigeration cycles, the development of more efficient and environmental acceptable working fluids has been gaining interest since the most used fluids (water/LiBr or water/NH3) can crystallize and are corrosive to metals [3,4]. \nIn recent years, ionic liquids were proposed as an alternative absorbent for absorption refrigeration cycles. Ionic liquids have been studied, due to their unique properties (for example low flammability, negligible vapor pressure, high chemical and thermal stabilities, easy recycling) in a wide range of applications (like in biomass processing, fuel processing and production, heat transport and storage, pharmaceutical and medicine research and many other fields) [3,5 ]. \nIn this work, the thermophysical properties of an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate ([emim][EtSO4]) and its mixtures with water, have been studied in order to evaluate its performance as a new working pair for absorption chillers. The thermophysical properties studied are viscosity, electrical conductivity and surface tension. Total miscibility of the two liquids was found in the temperature range studied (283.15 to 343.15 K, at 0.1 MPa) \n\nReferences: \n[1] M.S. Fernandes, G.J.V.N. Brites, J.J. Costa, A.R. Gaspar, V.A.F.
