Resumo
The resolution of water shortage and environmental pollution problems have been exploited through the use of semiconductor (SC) nanomaterials which properties, namely photocatalytic, are frequently to be suitable for pollutants removal from water. In this work, a straightforward approach for in situ modification of fibres with pristine and manganese-doped crystalline titanium dioxide, TiO2, and zinc oxide, ZnO, nanoparticles (NPs) is presented. Although the doping with manganese, Mn, affects the particle size and therefore its surface area, its effect on the bandgap energy depends on the SC. The hybrid materials, fibre/NPs, show good NPs coverage and stability and present advantages for recovery of the catalysts over powder samples. The fibre/NPs have been successfully used towards the photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants in water under UV and visible light. Its activity under simulated solar light makes these hybrids suitable for application under widely available solar light at less cost.
