Summary
The study on the natural mineral water of Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, aims to answer questions about the origin of sulfur in water and the chemical and biological processes that occur. The multidisciplinary approach included geochemical modeling of water-rock interaction and microbiological characterization of water through ribosomal RNA sequencing. Geochemical modeling pointed to the dissolution of gypsum and limestone-rich geological formations as the source of sulfur in water. Microbiological characterization identified species involved in sulfur metabolism, including microorganisms that oxidize and reduce sulfur. Microbial stratification in the aquifer may be affected by the increase in temperature with depth, which can lead to the occurrence of different bacterial communities in distinct layers of the aquifer.
