Resumo
It is well known that the published data on the thermophysical properties of ionic liquids are normally in disagreement if we compare results from different laboratories, using different samples and different measurement protocols [1]. This fact was recognized several years before, at the level of IUPAC, which established IUPAC Project 2002-005-1-100 (Thermodynamics of ionic liquids, ionic liquid mixtures, and the development of standardized systems), with the main objective of recommending a reference ionic liquid, making reference-quality measurements on selected thermophysical properties of both the pure ionic liquid and its mixtures, and establish recommended values for the properties measured and provide recommendations on measurement methods [2,3]. The ionic liquid chosen was 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluorosulfonyl)imide [C6mim][(CF3SO2)N], because it is stable, has a low viscosity compared with that of most common ionic liquids, has a low water solubility, and is easily prepared and purified. In addition, due to its hydrophobicity, is capable of being obtained very pure, with water amounts as small as 20 ppm.\nIt is the purpose of this paper to report results obtained with the sample of [C6mim][(CF3SO2)N] synthesised in the IUPAC project, namely on density, speed of sound, viscosity, surface tension and refractive index, and to reanalyse the validity of the recommended values for this properties, resolving problems then encountered in the work performed in the period 2002-2008. \nThis approach will facilitate to define standard reference data in the future for hydrophobic ionic liquids. \n\nReferences\n[1] C.A.
