Summary
There is a need for more efficient and environmentally friendly heat transfer fluids (HTF). Due to the high volumetric\nheat capacity, low vapor pressure and good thermal conductivity of the ionic liquids they have been studied as possible heat transfer fluids. Their combination with micro and nanomaterials (micro and nanofluids) has create great expectation considering the enhancement of the thermal properties. The micro and nanofluids are being studied as a more efficient alternative to the conventional HTF1,2. In this work we present a new type of microfluids, named IoBiofluids (propose for the first time in Queirós MSc thesis3). The IoBiofluids were defined as a new heat transfer fluid that correspond to a dispersion of lignocellulosic biomass particles (micro or nano size) in an ionic liquid. The IoBiofluids produced used different types lignocellulosic biomass microparticles dispersed in a mixture of a selected ionic liquid and water. The characterization of the lignocellulosic biomass and the base fluid was previously studied4. The thermal conductivity of several IoBiofluids were studied. The small addition (less than 1% (w/w)) of biomass particles to the based fluid didn’t\nincrease it thermal conductivity and at higher temperatures the thermal conductivity of the IoBiofluids decreased compared with the thermal conductivity of the base fluid. The addition of 3% of biomass microparticles, originated in an increase of more than 20% in the thermal conductivity of the base fluid. However, the stability of the IoBiofluids is still a challenge and more studies are needed in order to improve it.
