Summary
Molten alkali carbonates (pure and mixtures) are considered as fluids with favourable properties for high temperature applications, like in concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies or molten salt oxidation (MSO). Additionally the correspondent eutectics exhibit lower melting points minimizing the risk of freezing in pipes and other equipment. For the correct sizing of equipment, knowledge of thermophysical properties can be a decisive factor. However, browsing to the relevant literature shows that the scatter of data is tremendous. The aim of this paper is to provide some guidelines about the thermophysical properties of the ternary eutectic of molten carbonates, following the strategy previously employed for common liquids, hydrocarbons and water, under the auspices of the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry.
