Resumo
Agriculture, chemical industry and livestock activity are the main activities in Estarreja since 30’s of the XX century. In this century, particularly in the 50’s, the installation of the Estarreja Chemical Complex (ECC) took place with a huge investment in the chemical industry mainly in the production of ammonia for the manufacture of nitro-ammoniacal fertilisers used in agricul-ture. Despite the relevance of agricultural and industrial sectors in this region, these activities have been generating an increase of Estarreja shallow aquifer vulnerability, particularly surface water and groundwater, due to contamina-tion by raw materials and/or final products, as well as wastewater, nitrogen and natural fertilisers such as animal manure. Beside these kinds of contami-nation, groundwater can be also liable to salinization as Estarreja is a coastal zone, near to Ria de Aveiro. The main goal of the present study is the identi-fication of salinization phenomenon in Estarreja shallow aquifer through mapping of variables as well as the application of stable isotopes such as hy-drogen and oxygen isotopes. Results show that two different types of salini-zation could happen, one related to natural phenomenon, the saline intrusion, and the other associated to industrial activities.
