Summary
Even though buildings in urban environments constitute large consumption clusters, the exploitation of building facades for PV generation to meet this demand through self-consumption is yet largely residual. This work aims to assess the potential of collective self-consumption to unlock higher PV penetration levels in multi-apartment buildings, saturating the available rooftop area. Using real 15-minute electricity demand data, weather data and a typical building shape for the city of Lisbon, Portugal, the area availability and PV potential are assessed using Sketchup and BIMsolar. Then, Calliope estimates the optimal PV deployment while considering a range of techno-economical constraints. Results corroborate, on the one hand, the limitations of individual self-consumption. On the other hand, they point out that collective setups can increase the capacity of an optimal system by a factor of 2, boosting the deployment of vertical PV (which can represent up to 50% of the capacity of the PV system). Collectives, as aggregators of diverse loads, also led to an increase of both the self-sufficiency and self-consumption rates of 6 % and 7 %, respectively, in median.
