Summary
This work estimates the groundwater recharge in the area covered by the municipality of Almada and identifies recharge areas in risk. The recharge was estimated using a model of daily sequential water balance at soil level, designated BALSEQ_MOD owned by the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC). This model uses as input data the daily precipitation, monthly reference evapotranspiration, and quantifies the processes of surface infiltration, effective evapotranspiration and deep infiltration. The calculation performed was based on the period between 1981-10-01 and 2011- 09-30, a period considered in the series of precipitation and reference evapotranspiration. The precipitation data were collected from the station of Monte da Caparica, belonging to the Instituto da Água. Due to the existence of gaps it was necessary to establish a correlation with data from another station to fill the gaps. The data belong to the weather station at the Geophysical Institute Infante D. Luiz, that was chosen due to its proximity to the area studied, determined by Thiessen polygons. The surface infiltration was calculated based on the texture of the top layer of soil, the initial water content of soil and the daily precipitation, using linear regression equations. The effective evapotranspiration was calculated using the methodology presented by FAO, which considers the dual crop coefficients of vegetable cover, their periods of development, area occupied and depth of its roots. The effective evapotranspiration is based on data from reference evapotranspiration calculated with the Penman-Monteith method of FAO, using data from the meteorological station of the Geophysical Institute Infante D.Luiz, provided by the Department of Agricultural and Animal Production Institute of Agronomy, Technical University of Lisbon. The deep infiltration was calculated based on the characteristics of the soil. The results obtained allowed to estimate the average recharge in the municipality of Almada as 76.28 mm/year, which represents about 11% of the rainfall occurred in themunicipality. Two areas of recharge in risk due to increased impermeabilization were identified caused by the construction of buildings and roads; these areas are Aroeira and south of Capuchos.
