Resumo
Water is a fundamental element for life on Earth, representing the freshwater only 2% of the total volume of water on the planet and the aquifers, its second largest reservoir, representing around 12% of total freshwater ([1] see consulted websites). They are, therefore, a valuable natural resource and it is necessary to protect them, so that its chemical state is best suited to different uses. These are exposed to various contaminants, including pesticides and nitrates. In Várzea de Loures, particularly on the alluvial formations, the value of the concentration of nitrates exceeds the maximum allowable value by law, either for human consumption (Decreto-Lei n.º 306/2007, de 27 de Agosto), or for irrigation (Decreto-Lei n.º 236/98, de 1 de Agosto). Artificial recharge is a technique used both to improve the chemical quality of groundwater, and to increase the amount of water available in underground reserves. The aim of this thesis is to assess the effects of Artificial Recharge in the rehabilitation of water-bearing formations contaminated by nitrates, by the dilution effect. This assessment was made in a theoretical way, trying to simulate by mathematical modeling of the system, a rehabilitation situation of groundwater from Várzea de Loures area, through the application of Artificial Recharge methods. After application of these methods it is expected an improvement of the water quality, particularly, a decrease in nitrate concentration. The necessary data for the hydraulic parameters of the water-bearing formations were obtained mainly by literature and, when possible, calculated by empirical relation methods, using values obtained by particle size laboratory tests on soil samples previously collected by Silva (2003).
