Resumo
The National Ecological Reserve (NER) is a land management tool that allows the safeguard of the ecological structure of a region. One of the typologies to include in NER is the "strategic areas of protection and aquifer recharge" which are defined by vulnerability indexes to groundwater contami-nation, such as the susceptibility index. There are however other indexes to assess the vulnerability of aquifers to contamination. Starting from the definition of the NER for the typology "strategic areas of pro-tection and aquifer recharge" for the Almada Municipality a comparison of methods for assessing the vulnerability to contamination of groundwater bodies is made using different indexes (DRASTIC (Aller, L., et al, 1987), IS (Ribeiro, L., 2005) and IS according to the Council of Ministers Resolution 81/2012). The study involved the collection of data for the various parameters of the in-dexes studied (geology of the aquifer formation, depth of the water level, recharge, topography, soil type, influence of the vadose zone, hydraulic conductivity and land use) as well as its treatment using a program for the treatment of spatial data (ESRI ArcGIS version 10.1, 2012). Comparing the three indexes is concluded that, as a rule, lower values of vul-nerability are in the northeastern area of the municipality, associated with areas of higher elevation. Is it not the case in the susceptibility index calculated by the method of Ribeiro (2005) which seems to indicate the greater influence of using the land use parameter in vulnerability calculations.
