Summary
The River Almonda’s Hydrographic Basin is located on the right margin of the Tejo river, encompassing an area marked largely by agriculture terrains intercepted by urban focus. The agricultural and urban nature of the study area gives some concerns when it comes to the quality of groundwater, in respect to human consumption and irrigation. The principal aims of the study were to determine the quality of groundwater and isotopic characterization (δ18O and δ2H). The present study consisted in inventorying water catchments, wells and boreholes, collection of samples for physico-chemical and isotopic analysis; groundwater quality classificationand evaluation of δ18O and δ2H isotopic values. The analyzed groundwater present hydrogeochemical facies varying mainly between calcium bicarbonate and sodic-calcium bicarbonate. In terms of electrical conductivity the values range between 1879 and 251,6 μS/cm, and the temperature 17,3 and 25,4 oC. iv Intensive agricultural activity greatly influences the concentration of some ions in the groundwater composition, namely sulphate, potassium and nitrate. The isotopic valuesof δ18O and δ2H suggest meteoric origin for the groundwater, since there isn’t a significant deviation from the Global and Portugal’s meteoric lines. According to the groundwater quality classification, the aforementioned is mainly good regarding human use and irrigation, excepting the samples collected in severely accentuated agricultural zones.
