Resumo
Plants from natural wetlands, as salt marshes and Atlantic mires, play a key role in the global biogeochemical cycle of the halogen bromine (Br), with known consequences for stratospheric ozone depletion. With this preliminary field study, we intend to evaluate the potential for Br retention by native and common species in salt marshes – Juncus maritimus – and minerogenic mires – Polytrichum commune and Sphagnum denticulatum – in the Minho region, NW Portugal. The goal is to characterize Br inputs via plants to the soils/sediments of their respective wetlands, where this element is strongly and directly correlated with the organic fraction. The results demonstrate the uptake and bioconcentration of Br by the three analyzed species. This occurs specially from the aquatic component (as bromide) and not from the substrate where, according to the computed bioconcentration factors, Br is not in readily bioavailable forms. It is also highly plausible that the low translocation of Br in J. maritimus (from belowground to aerial organs) mainly indicates a phytovolatilization process, involving the formation and emission to the atmosphere of methyl bromide (CH3Br).
