Summary
Solar photovoltaics installed capacity is expected to grow in the next years as a result of decreasing costs and new regulation being approved at the European level. This pushes for more robust approaches in order to analyze the effects of photovoltaics on local distribution and optimal system designs to which energy modelling is a valuable computational research tool. In this work two datasets on Portuguese case studies (urban and rural) are explored using Calliope, an open-source multi-energy system modelling framework with the objective of designing high-photovoltaic penetration in self-consumption schemes. Results show similar self-consumption ratios in both locations but a tendency for increased are a use in urban case, although available area and grid capacity constraints are not limiting factors for the integration of photovoltaic systems. Calliope framework, when applied to these datasets, reveals a power and valuable tool for future assessments.
