Summary
The hydromineral system of Sandim, located in the NE of Portugal, is characterized by high mineralized CO2-rich water of Na-HCO3 to Na/Ca-HCO3 types. The composition of the gas phase is dominated by CO2 (up to 79.2 %), and significant CH4 concentration (up to 11,400 ppm). The δ13C in the TDIC varies between +2.4 and +3.0 ‰ vs V-PDB, and can be ascribed to different carbon origins: i) upper mantle; ii) methanogenesis and iii) contribution of metamorphic CO2. The CO2/3He and 3He/4He ratios outside the limits defined for MORB fluids. The presence of 3H in all samples indicates shallow and relatively short underground flowpaths. However, the 14C concentrations in the TDIC of the mineral waters around 2 pmC, corroborate an active carbon source without 14C. The geochemical and isotopic composition of the CO2-rich waters points to the hydromineral system of Sandim as a shallow aquifer contaminated by deep source gases.
