Biological responses of Sphagnum auriculatum Schimp. to water pollution by heavy metals

Summary
Six samples of Sphagnum auriculatum Schimp. were collected at the source of the River Ave, an unpolluted mesotrophic site in northern Portugal, and were transplanted using a moss-bag technique. Each transplant was exposed for two or four weeks in different pollution catchment sites along the river. The heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn) contents of the different transplants were compared to the control. The results obtained for pigment content (Chl total) were directly related to the metal concentration. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis observations were carried out on the cell walls and pores from material transplanted at a site with high concentrations of Fe and Mn. We attempted to correlate the present metal concentration of the transplanted material with that of herbarium specimens from the same area (collected in 1924 and 1981).
