Semiconductor Bi2S3 and ZnS Nanocatalysts Supported on Cotton Fibers for Dyes Removal

Resumo
The development of innovative and efficient technologies for wastewater treatment is under intense research pressure due to environmental and societal requirements. The use of photocatalysis for pollutants removal has been exploited and several metal oxides and chalcogenides (e.g. ZnO, TiO2, Bi2S3 and ZnS) have shown promising results.[1-3] The immobilization of such nanomaterials on fibers (e.g. cotton and polyester) has imparted innovative and improved properties to those composites such as UV blocking, self-cleaning, anti-static, antibacterial and photocatalytic.[2-4] \nIn this work, semiconducting nanoparticles (NPs) such as Bi2S3 and ZnS were successfully attached to cotton fibers using in situ synthesis approaches. The resulting composites were structural, morphological and optically characterised and the effective immobilization of crystalline, small size NPs was confirmed by XRD, SEM and DRS. The attached NPs imparted distinct optical properties to the composite materials resulting in dissimilar response to light such as band gap energy. The photocatalytic response of the resulting composites was evaluated and the removal of dyes used in the leather industry studied using UV and/or visible light irradiation. The immobilized NPs preserved their photocatalytic ability and revealed promising results towards dyes removal. Further advantage was attained by using supported catalysts regarding its recovery and reutilization and decreasing its release to the environment.
