Summary
The thin film platinum temperature sensors developed in our group since 1996 proved to be very accurate up 1100? C. The heating element is a metal-strip deposited over a flat source. A metallic thin film of pure platinum is deposited by PVD in a ceramic substrate and a very thin electrically insulating layer of a ceramic was deposited by the same technique. Through adequate calibration of its resistance versus temperature it is possible to guarantee the success of this thermometer even in corrosive environments. For this project several important advantages can be summarized by: Applicable to industrial and research fields: Mechanical robustness, Upholds a wide range of temperature and pressure, Miniaturization is possible, Several geometries are possible The width, length and thickness (0.1-0.5μm) of the metal platinum film strips can be designed to fill needs of a given application of the thermometer, as they control the stability, sensitivity, accuracy and cost of the sensor. Figure 1 shows different sensors designs, changing the width (100-110μm) and the length (10-20mm) of the strip, according the needs of the application uncertainty and the resistivity of the system.\nAfter appropriate heat treatment, in this case up to 450 ?C, it is possible to develop stable and very accurate platinum thin film thermometers with total uncertainty better than 0,24K. These types of thermometers can be used in R&D and are sufficiently robust for industrial applications.
