Summary
The capture in intertidal sediments of live bait for fishing has increased at a global scale and is an important source of revenue for the people living along the coast given the increase in demand. This activity is the source of strong impacts caused by trampling and disturbance of large areas of sediment that significantly influence both the biogeochemical cycles, and estuarine biological communities. In this context the implementation of a rational management of bait digging is essential. Live bait (mainly polychaete annelids and sipunculans) and other macroinvertebrates, such as mollusks and crustaceans are caught in many Portuguese brackish systems, and the current dimension of catches is underestimated. This is the case of the polychaete catch, used either as live bait or as a food supplement in the aquaculture activities. In order to estimate the catching effort (number, age and gender of the catchers, target species, tools and techniques used in this activity), the Tagus and Sado estuaries and Aveiro and Formosa coastal lagoons were selected as study sites, under the project "Polychaete annelids as live bait in Portugal: the catch management, import and cultivation", funded by the PROMAR Program. The obtained results showed that: i) only in the Sado estuary polychaetes were caught by a number of diggers approaching those dedicated to other groups such as bivalves, undoubtedly the main target in Tagus, Ria Aveiro and Ria Formosa; ii) polychaetes were the target group for 0.5% of the catchers in Tagus, 2.4% in RF, 10.4% in RA and, 28,8% and 14,9% for Sado, respectively on working days and non-working days; iii) in Tagus, Ria de Aveiro and Ria de Formosa, Diopatra neapolitana was the most sought out bait while Marphysa sanguinea was clearly dominant in Sado; iv) previously dominant the capture of the rag-worm (Hediste diversicolor) appears to be minimal; v) capture by female diggers only was found to be relevant in Sado and on working days. Overall, the low polychaetes demand may be due to competition with the imported bait species and to the fact that bivalves are more profitable (especially the Japanese clam, Ruditapes philippinarum).\\n
