Summary
An IoNanofluid is defined as a stable dispersion of the nanomaterial in an ionic liquid. Since we first reported the enhanced thermal conductivity of the system with respect to the pure ionic liquid [1], many experimental and theoretical studies have been performed, using several nanomaterials like carbon nanotubes and graphene. There are several reasons to study these complex systems:\n- Enhanced thermal properties for heat transfer and heat storage\n- Complex interactions create nano-regions, enhancing reactivity and selectivity of chemical reactions (nanocatalysis)\n- IoNanofluids are designable and fine-tuneable through base ILs to meet any specific application or task requirement\n- Non-flammability and non-volatility at ambient conditions, environmentally friendly solvents, and reaction fluids \nThe success of its use in scientific or industrial applications depends on the stability of the dispersion, as particle aggregation can destroy our purpose. Aggregation of NP’s in ionic liquids is caused by a competition between WDW forces and double layer forces screening caused by ions (DL), at the particle/IL interface. Balance between these forces control aggregation of NP’s in IL’s, and therefore the stability of a IoNanofluid.\nWe present an overall view of the actual research in nanosystems at our laboratory, with special emphasis in preparation, properties and applications of IoNanofluids. Details can be found in a upcoming publication [2].\n
