Summary
The large portion of the world’s energy system is still based on fossil fuels. And the controversial discussion on whether this resources will come to an end with this rate of consumption is still taking place nowadays, but it all points out to a need for new types of energy. In fact, government policies in several countries are encouraging the use of renewable energy, by implementing directives promoting its use such as “Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources”. This rises the challenge in substituting diesel fuel and petrol with an alternative that are the secondary biofuels produced by biomass, such as bioalcohols [1]. However, despite of all the advantages in the use of these alternatives, there are several challenges yet to be resolve, such as efficiency improvement and the overall cost of the process design.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\n\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\nTo obtain better results, the design of these processes is fundamental, and for that the alcohol properties must be well studied and established in a wide range of working temperatures and pressures. This fact has been the funding of a project developed on Centro de Química Estrutural in the Faculty of Sciences off the Lisbon University. Several binary mixtures of alcohol and water have been studied using Vapor Liquid Equilibria and densimetry, to better understand the dynamic of these mixtures [2-4]. Our most recent studies have been conducted with 1-butanol, the most promising biofuel to substitute gasoline. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\n
