Resumo
The work carried out in Portugal at the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa in the last 20 years reflects an important evolution, since the first prototypes of Platinum thin-film sensors for the measurement of thermal conductivity at very high temperatures were produced by PVD [1,2]. At the same time these sensors for measurement of thermal conductivity are also very accurate thermometers. According to the requirements of the measurement, temperature range, accuracy and with a few simple changes in their construction these versatile sensors are easily adapted to the measurement of molten salts, molten metals, gases, gas mixtures, pure liquids, ionic liquids, among others. The need for measurements performed in an industrial environment led to the construction of a portable measurement bridge which allows the determination of the actual system property. It is worthy to point out that the sensors and the measuring instruments developed can achieve less uncertain thermal conductivity data and temperature than all commercial instruments available in a temperature range between -20 and 1000ºC, for variable sample volumes between 20 and 100 cm3. We present data from multiple sensors calibration with ascending and descending cycles in temperature, thermal conductivity measurements with various fluids, describing the evolutionary methodology according to the needs arising from matching scientific rigor, sample volume, reactivity, temperature range and “in situ” measurements.
