Understanding the immiscibility of water+1-butanol by VLE

Resumo
Butanol has been in almost continuous production since 1916, most of the time as a solvent or basic chemical. However, new uses for butanol have emerged, e.g. as a diesel and kerosene replacement, biocide and C4 compound for chemical industry [1]. In 2006 Schwarz and co-workers [1] demonstrated that n-butanol can be used either 100% in unmodified 4-cycle ignition engines or blended up to at least 30% (70% diesel) in a diesel compression engine or to 20% (80% kerosene) in a jet turbine engine. This means a new incentive for the production of this type of biofuel. \nButanol tolerates water contamination better than ethanol due to its partially immiscibility and is less corrosive and more suitable for distribution through existing pipelines for gasoline. In blends with diesel or gasoline, butanol is less likely to separate from this fuel than ethanol if the fuel is contaminated with water. This fact has introduced a new study for the Vapour-Liquid Equilibrium (VLE) experimental program using a flow apparatus [2] developed in the Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE) at FCUL. This equipment has delivered good accurate measurements in the past [3,4], and with simple modifications in the feeding and sampling sections it has provided VLE measurements for the butanol+water system between 373 and 423 K. The samples obtained were characterized by densimetry/speed of sound and by volumetric Karl Fisher technique.
