Summary
Ionic liquid systems have now been applied to many areas, with especially success in the areas of energy and environment. Absorption refrigeration can benefit substantially by the change of current working pairs by more convenient systems, environmentally harmless and energy more efficient. \\nIn our laboratory in Lisbon we have decided to study the thermophysical properties one type of alternative systems, namely ionic liquid + water mixtures. Measurements of density, thermal conductivity, surface tension and viscosity were performed for temperatures below 80ºC, at ambient pressure, using several ionic liquids, like [C2mim][dca], [C2mim][C2H5SO4], [C4mpyr][dca] and [P6 6 6 14][dca] [1-3]. The results obtained show different structures (and LL immiscibility gaps) of the liquid mixtures that seem to demonstrate that the intermolecular forces, polar and non-polar, including hydrogen bonding, play a fundamental role in defining the structure (local and bulk) of these mixtures. From structures dominated by the ionic liquid structure with expected behavior at low and medium water molar fractions, to minima and maxima in the properties (including immiscibility) for xwater greater than 0.8, plead of interesting phenomena was observed. In order to better understand this behavior, diffusion measurements will also be obtained.\\nWe present in this paper a brief outline of the data on the properties measured for each system, as well as a discussion about its possible use in absorption refrigeration.
