Summary
Acacia longifolia is a leguminous species from South of Australia brought to Portugal in the 1940s. It was introduced in sand dunes along the Portuguese coast, as a way to prevent their erosion, but its population quickly spread and invaded most of the soil eventually replacing the native species. Many studies have been made to evaluate the environmental impact of A. longifolia. However, little is known about this species’ genetic variability or the evolution of the populations while the dispersion takes place. In this study, we performed a cluster analysis using two types of molecular markers - Inter-Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR) and microsatellites (SSR) – to compare the genetic diversity of A. longifolia populations in three different regions of the Portuguese coast: Osso da Baleia (Pombal), Pinheiro da Cruz and Vila Nova de Milfontes. Furthermore, the genetic diversity of these populations of acacias was also compared with the first population of A. longifolia in Portugal, which, according to historical record, was introduced around 1940 in Vila Nova de Milfontes. Preliminary results from cluster analysis suggest that A. longifolia populations from the three locations seem to be similar to each other and to the original population planted last century.
