Summary
As a new class of heat transfer fluids, ionanofluids exhibit superior thermal conductivity compared to their base ionic liquids (ILs) [1-3]. Besides highly desired enhanced thermal properties, the fascinating features of ionanofluids are that they are environmental friendly, designable and fine-tunable through base ILs for any specific application or task. However, unlike nanofluids, no attempt has so far been made on the theoretical development for the prediction of the thermal conductivity of ionanofluids (kinf). In this study, predictions of classical [e.g., 4] and recent models used for nanfluids [e.g., 5] and experimental results on the thermal conductivity of various ionanofluids are compared and analyzed in order to evaluate heat transfer mechanisms and feasibility of models. Representative results (Fig. 1) demonstrate that although Murshed et al.’s (MLY) model for nanofluids with adjusted parameters (nanolayer thickness\nh = 2 nm and kinl =Ckil, where C = 4 and 6) yields reasonable results [5], the classical Hamilton-Crosser (HC) model [4] severely under-predict the thermal conductivity of these CNT-ionanofluids. Nevertheless, the actual heat transfer mechanisms of these new fluids cannot be fully explored by these existing models.
