Thermoelectric cooling of electronic systems

Resumo
Modern electronic industries are facing serious technical challenges to deal with the thermal management of their high performance devices. Traditional cooling approaches are not capable of sufficiently cooling those devices, whereas like most of the emerging techniques [1-2], thermoelectric coolers [3] show promises in cooling them. An electrical cooler which creates heat flux between the junctions of two different types of semiconductors through the Peltier effect, is called thermoelectric cooler (TEC). Fig.1 shows the cooling concept of TEC, which transfers heat from one side of the device to the other with consumption of electrical energy. Due to simple working principle, TECs are popular in many applications. TECs are also compact, highly reliable, environmental friendly with no moving parts and offer great potential to enhance the cooling rate of electronic module packages and other devices [4]. TECs can also be integrated into electronic packages for their hotspots cooling [5]. Some components in electrical systems and computer such as\nmicroprocessors and power amplifiers are cooled by this cooling technique. In this paper, an overview of this cooling technique in cooling electronic devices and systems will be presented.
